Dear
Parents,
This has been a great week in
Kindergarten. The class has started to
practice breaking into groups and using at least one literacy center during
phonics/reading time. In the next couple
weeks, the children will be introduced to more center rotations, and will be
quite comfortable with the morning routine.
Here are some of the other things the children have been working on this
week:
In reading, the children listened to the
story Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come! The children compared the ways they got ready
for school to the main character, and the school activities they both
enjoyed. Everyone used watercolors to
create their chalkboard pictures of their favorite parts of Kindergarten. They also listened to, and actively retold
the story Chicka Chicka
Boom Boom. Afterwards,
they each made their own “coconut tree”.
In phonics, the class focused on the
letter “Mm”. They listened to the song
“Marvin the Monkey” for “Mm” words, drew pictures, and
either sounded out the words themselves or dictated them to me.
In writing, everyone contributed to a
class chart about their friends in the classroom. They practiced tracking the print of their
own sentence, and reinforced the words “my” and “is” from last week’s chart.
In math, the focus continues to be on
sorting. This week the children had to
sort objects by using two attributes.
Everyone loves to sort, especially when they can write on the computer
and project it on the board.
In science, the children started talking
about the difference between living and nonliving things.
In religion, the children learned about
the Bible. They also had their first
experience with the K for J program the school is implementing this year. The children met with the other school
students that make up their faith family, and started to learn about the virtue
of hard work.
